✦ How to Install Flutter SDK on Windows: Complete Beginner Setup Guide

❖ Welcome to Param Classes! ????

Are you ready to start developing your first mobile application? Before writing Flutter code, you need to install Flutter SDK and prepare your computer for app development.

Don't worry if you are a complete beginner. In this tutorial, we will explain everything step by step using simple English.

In our previous tutorials, we learned what Flutter is and the difference between Flutter and Native Android Development. Now it's time to prepare our development environment.

In this practical tutorial, you will learn:

  • What is Flutter SDK?

  • Where to download Flutter SDK?

  • How to install Flutter on Windows.

  • How to configure the PATH environment variable.

  • How to check Flutter installation.

  • How to use Flutter Doctor.

  • How to fix basic installation problems.

Let's start installing Flutter with Param Classes!

✦ 1. What Is Flutter SDK?

Flutter SDK stands for Flutter Software Development Kit.

It is a collection of development tools required to create, run, test, and build Flutter applications.

In simple words, Flutter SDK provides the tools that your computer needs to understand and execute Flutter development commands.

It includes important tools such as:

❖ Flutter command-line tools.

❖ Dart SDK.

❖ Flutter framework libraries.

❖ Development and build tools.

Without the Flutter SDK, you cannot properly create and run Flutter projects using the Flutter command-line tools.

✦ 2. Requirements Before Installing Flutter

Before starting the installation, make sure your computer is ready.

For this tutorial, we are using Windows.

Basic Requirements:

  • A Windows computer.

  • An internet connection.

  • Enough free disk space for the SDK and development tools.

  • A compatible code editor.

  • Git for Windows for the manual installation method.

You should also have administrator access if your computer requires it for software installation.

Beginner Tip: Keep your Flutter SDK in a simple folder path. Avoid folders with spaces or special characters.

✦ 3. Download Flutter SDK from the Official Website

First, download Flutter SDK from the official Flutter website.

Official Flutter Installation Guide:

https://docs.flutter.dev/install

You can also follow the manual installation guide:

https://docs.flutter.dev/install/manual

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the official Flutter installation website.

  2. Select Windows as your operating system.

  3. Choose the manual installation method if you want to configure everything yourself.

  4. Follow the instructions to download the latest stable Flutter SDK.

  5. Save the downloaded ZIP file on your computer.

Always download Flutter from the official website instead of unknown third-party websites.

✦ 4. Install Git for Windows

Git is a version control tool used by developers. It is also listed as a prerequisite in Flutter's manual Windows installation instructions.

Official Git Download:

https://git-scm.com/install/windows

Follow these steps:

  1. Open the Git download website.

  2. Download Git for Windows.

  3. Open the downloaded installer.

  4. Follow the installation instructions.

  5. Complete the installation.

For a beginner, the default installation settings are generally suitable.

✦ 5. Create a Folder for Flutter SDK

After downloading Flutter, create a folder where you want to store the SDK.

For example:

C:\src

You can also use:

C:\Users\YourName\develop

The Flutter SDK will be extracted inside this folder.

Important: Avoid installing Flutter inside folders that require special permissions or have spaces and special characters in their paths.

Keeping your development tools in one organised folder makes future updates and troubleshooting easier.

✦ 6. Extract the Flutter SDK ZIP File

Now find the Flutter ZIP file that you downloaded.

Follow these steps:

  1. Open your Downloads folder.

  2. Find the downloaded Flutter ZIP file.

  3. Right-click the file.

  4. Select Extract All.

  5. Choose your development folder as the destination.

  6. Complete the extraction.

After extraction, you should have a folder structure similar to this:

C:\src\flutter

Inside the Flutter folder, you will find several directories and files.

One important folder is:

C:\src\flutter\bin

We will use this folder in the next step.

✦ 7. Add Flutter to the Windows PATH Environment Variable

This is one of the most important steps.

PATH is a Windows environment variable that tells your computer where to find executable programs.

When you add Flutter's bin folder to PATH, you can run Flutter commands from Command Prompt, PowerShell, and supported terminals without typing the complete folder location.

Follow these steps carefully:

Step 1: Open Environment Variables

  1. Press the Windows key.

  2. Search for Environment Variables.

  3. Open Edit the system environment variables.

  4. Click Environment Variables.

Step 2: Find the Path Variable

Look under User variables for your username.

Find the variable named:

Path

Select it and click Edit.

Step 3: Add Flutter bin Path

Click New and enter your Flutter bin folder location.

For our example:

C:\src\flutter\bin

If you installed Flutter in another location, enter that location instead.

Step 4: Save Changes

Click OK to save the changes in all open windows.

Close your existing Command Prompt, PowerShell, and terminal windows. Open a new terminal so that Windows can use the updated PATH.

Now Flutter should be accessible from your terminal.

✦ 8. Check Whether Flutter Is Installed Correctly

Now let's check our Flutter installation.

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell.

Type the following command:

flutter --version

Press Enter.

If Flutter is installed and configured correctly, the terminal will display Flutter version information.

Next, check the Dart installation:

dart --version

Flutter includes the Dart SDK, so you can use the Dart command through your Flutter installation.

If both commands work, your Flutter SDK is accessible from the terminal.

✦ 9. Run Flutter Doctor

Now comes another important command.

Open Command Prompt and type:

flutter doctor

Press Enter.

Flutter Doctor checks your development environment and identifies missing tools or configuration problems.

It checks areas such as:

❖ Flutter SDK installation.

❖ Android development tools.

❖ Connected devices.

❖ Supported development environments.

You may see checkmarks, warnings, or errors in the output.

A checkmark means the related check passed. A warning or error means you may need to complete additional setup.

Important: You do not need to install every possible platform tool immediately. Set up the tools required for the platform you want to develop for.

✦ 10. Set Up Android Development Tools

If your goal is to build Android applications with Flutter, you will also need Android development tools.

Download Android Studio from the official website:

https://developer.android.com/studio

After installing Android Studio, follow the official Flutter Android setup guide:

https://docs.flutter.dev/platform-integration/android/setup

You will need the appropriate Android SDK components and either an Android Emulator or a compatible physical Android device.

You can use Android Studio to create and manage virtual Android devices for testing your Flutter applications.

Remember: Installing the Flutter plugin in Android Studio does not replace installing the Flutter SDK or configuring its PATH.

✦ 11. Common Flutter Installation Problems

Beginners may face a few common problems during installation.

❖ Problem 1: Flutter Command Not Recognised

If you see an error saying that Flutter is not recognised, check your PATH variable.

Make sure you have added:

C:\src\flutter\bin

Use your actual Flutter installation location.

Close and reopen your terminal after changing PATH.

❖ Problem 2: Flutter Doctor Shows Errors

Run:

flutter doctor

Read the error message carefully and follow the recommended setup instructions.

For Android development, check whether Android Studio and the required Android SDK components are installed.

❖ Problem 3: Android Device Not Found

Make sure your Android Emulator is running or your physical device is connected correctly.

For a physical device, check USB debugging and the required device permissions.

❖ Problem 4: Flutter SDK Not Extracted Properly

Check that the Flutter folder contains the required files and that the bin directory includes the Flutter command.

If files are missing, download the official SDK again and extract it properly.
